2.  A person who is mean-spirited and unfriendly.

 

Don’t Be A ‘Re-Giftmas’ Grinch! 

Where’s the fun in that?  Here are some guidelines to help you avoid the pitfalls of being a Grinch during the “12 Days of Re-Giftmas.”

  • A Grinch receives a smile but doesn’t give one back.  A Grinch gets all the love others have to offer but does not return the gesture.
  • A Grinch absolutely does not believe in re-gifting the good things in life.
  • An unexpected surprise would delight just about anyone, but not a Grinch.  A Grinch is way too self-centered for that.

Only A Grinch Wouldn’t Enjoy the “12 Days of Re-Giftmas”

  • Simple things can be re-gifted this holiday season, but a Grinch always misses the opportunity to brighten someone’s day.
  • Bliss and delight usually come with re-gifting, but not for a Grinch.  Why?  Because a Grinch doesn’t re-gift in the first place!  Here’s an unofficial Grinch quote we found:  “Help me.  I’m feeling.”  That says it all.
  • If you’re a Grinch, there’s no way you will feel the side effects of re-gifting – feeling happy, proud and even good about yourself.
  • Gifts and  presents are not the same thing.  A Grinch is more than happy to receive a present but is not about to make it a gift by turning it into a moment of joy for someone else.
  • Those who are really into the “12 Days of Re-Giftmas” are good at sharing a simple act of kindness.  But a Grinch … well, what a Grinch does should be clear by now.

OK then.  Don’t be a Re-Giftmas Grinch!  That’s one problem that’s easy to avoid this holiday season.  Let yourself go and enjoy the “12 Days of Re-Giftmas.”

12 Days of Re-Giftmas! It’s Coming Soon to You!

Everyone is familiar with “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” from the partridge in the pear tree to the five golden rings and the drummers making a racket.  You might also be familiar with the “Seinfeld” episode that made a very entertaining point about the concept of “re-gifting.”  (Want a reminder and maybe even a laugh?  WATCH THIS.)

We wondered what would happen if we combined “The Twelve Days of Christmas” and re-gifting.  I can  hear you now:  “How did you think of something like that?”  Well, the idea was recently inspired by a comment during one of our casino training sessions.  I grabbed ahold of that little gem and ran with it!

So we are sharing our own “12 Days of Re-Giftmas.”

Our “12 Days of Re-Giftmas” Will Help People Feel Special, Happy and Valuable

The concept is straightforward and easy to do.  We want people to re-gift simple things this holiday season.  Over the next few weeks, we will send you ideas on how to do this.

Here’s a sneak peek … If a person gives you a smile, you re-gift it to a few other people.  “Re-Giftmas” is all about sharing the gifts that you receive.  Who knows, you might even be the person who starts the re-gifting process.  Maybe you buy the person behind you in line a coffee anonymously as a Secret Santa or you write a note to a few people that you love so they can read how you feel about them.

“Re-Giftmas” is all about making others feel special, happy and valuable over the next few weeks.

Please read the WARNING below before getting started.

Make our “12 Days of Re-Giftmas” special for you and your team.  Of course, our ideas are just suggestions.  Feel free to add your own creative twists and make “Re-Giftmas” your own.  Our view is simple.  It’s better to re-gift one small act of kindness than to spend all your time planning and no time re-gifting.

We are knee deep in Q4 Mystery Shops and there is a common theme … shops need to be more detailed and more specific. Casinos are using mystery shop data in a variety of ways, ranging from positive recognition to accountability.

 

A critical point to look at is whether your service standards are specific and easily demonstrable. The reason this is so important is because being specific and demonstrable makes it easy for mystery shoppers to say yes or no to a behavior. Terms like “energetic smile” are impossible to measure because they’re so subjective.

 

For accuracy, you want the service standards to be clear cut for both the casino mystery shoppers and the team members. The more clarity the better!

People use the word “training,” but what they really mean is developing people. I get emails all the time asking if we do “Casino Training” or “Casino Customer Service Training” and I know what they’re asking. But in reality, they don’t want us to train their people. They are looking for ways to develop them and improve their guest service skills.  (Yes, there is a difference between a customer and a guest. Customers are transactional and a guest is someone you invite to your home or, in this case, to casino your casino.)

 

Going forward, casinos must invest time and money in developing the people who work at the property so they see service not as part of their job but as their primary focus. The casinos that do the hard work now to develop a culture of service excellence will be rewarded with success in the future.

Final Note

As we near Thanksgiving, take a moment this week to thank guests and team members for all that they do each day for your casino. Things are not so easy for them these days, so a “thank you” could be just what they need.

 

As far as team members are concerned, your gesture doesn’t need to be an all-employee event. You could do something as simple as having each executive walk the floor for 60 minutes each day until Thanksgiving and show their appreciation.
